Fireside chat with Alan Jay, Co-Founder at Sports Mole

Who is Alan Jay?

Alan Jay is a serial entrepreneur who has been involved with computers (and writing about them) since the 1980s, because involved in the internet in 1987, was a co-founder of IMDb, Digital Spy, and Sports Mole.  Is a regular Kite Surfer – so if I’m not on the computer I’m probably heading to the beach (one of those running the London Kite Surfers Association) and Espresso maker/drinker (Espresso as a hobby).

What’s the story behind Sports Mole?

A business started by Neil Wilkes and Alan Jay after selling Digital Spy to Hachette/Lagadere.

What was the most difficult part of your experience in the early beginnings?

What are you most proud of regarding your business?

Great editorial team.

What is your vision for the future of Sports Mole?

Great content and more require users.

What’s your advice for the businesses that are trying to adapt to this economic climate?

That you didn’t work from home already – when we started Sports Mole we decided on a virtual business something we decided after Digital Spy the requirement for an office wasn’t really nescessarry we could do all the meetings and development over the internet with the tools that have been available for many years.  The technology is there to use it, supplement it with physical meetings when nescessarry.

Please name a few technologies which have the greatest impact on your business.

What books do you have on your nightstand?

Don’t read at bedtime, but I’m currently listening to Crag Allinson – Expiditanary Force – Breakaway.

Because of the current economic climate our publication has started a series of discussions with professional individuals meant to engage our readers with relevant companies and their representatives in order to discuss their involvement, what challenges they have had in the past and what they are looking forward to in the future. This sequence aims to present a series of experiences, recent developments, changes and downsides in terms of their business areas, as well as their goals, values, career history, the high-impact success outcomes and achievements.
